Sri Lanka plan US790mn initiative to reduce disasters risk in river valleys
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is planning a 790 million dollar, 10-year program to cut natural disaster risk in key river valleys in the country, the government said.
Sri Lanka has devised a plan to reduce climate risks in the Mahaweli, Kelani, Malwathu Oya, Nilwala, Atttanagalu and Mundeni Aru river valleys.
It will also cover Deduru Oya, Maha Oya and Gal Oya river valleys.
The project will take between 8 to 10 years to implement and will cost 790 million US dollars and will be implemented in three phases by Sri Lanka’s Department of Irrigation.
The cabinet of ministers had cleared the plan presented by Irrigation and Agriculture Minister P Harrison and Disaster Management Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara. (Colombo/May01/2019-SB)
