Sri Lanka PM expects talks with President next week
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he expected discussions to continue with President Maithripala Sirisena over cabinet changes next week, amid reports of talks with a faction backing ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
"President Sirisena had told me that there have been talks with the Joint Opposition (faction backing ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa)", Wickremesinghe said.
"He went to Polonnaruwa and he comes back we will have more discussions next week."
Wickremesinghe said he was acting under the constitution as prime minister, would continue to do so.
A spokesman for the joint opposition had said a committee of two had been formed to discuss forming an administration and the attorney general would be asked for an opinion whether Prime Minister could be sacked by the President.
Prime Minister Wickremesighe questioned whether the joint opposition had indeed promised its support. (Colombo/Feb16/2018)
