Sri Lanka PM expresses support for Turkey’s elected government
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed support for Turkey’s elected administration as a coup by a section of the military appeared to be crumbling.
Wickremesinghe said foiling an attempt to overturn a democratically elected government through a military coups would please all people who valued democracy.
Wickremesinghe said he was happy to note that the President and Prime Minister of Turkey had been able to preserve democratic rule and assured the support of Sri Lanka and its people.
Those behind the coup said in a statement that their move was in support of Turkey’s secular values.
President President Tayyip Erdogan had come under fire for rising authoritarianism, attempts to block social media and also for undermining the country’s secular traditions.
