Sri Lanka PM gives police job to close confidant
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Wednesday gave the Law and Order ministry to his close confidant Sagala Ratnayaka who is an economist by profession and a former HSBC employee.
Ratnayaka, 47, was elevated from Southern Development Ministry and given the additional portfolio left vacant by Prime Minister’s former legal guru and disgraced lawyer Tilak Marapana.
The new Law and Order Minister has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Lewis and Clarke college in Portland, Oregon. He was credit operations manager at HSBC Colombo just before he entered parliament in 2001.
Officials said Ratnayaka will remain chief of staff at Wickremesinghe’s office. He is one of the most trusted lieutenants of the Prime Minister and is also a member of the Royal College old boys’ network.
Marapana’s Prison Reforms portfolio went to minister D.M. Swaminathan who will take the new responsibility in addition to the Resettlement portfolio. (Colombo/November 11 2015)
