Sri Lanka PM says Coronavirus no bar to celebrate Vesak values
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that a Coroanvirus pandemic and curfews should not be bar to celebrate the values of Vesak, a key event market by Buddhists all over the world.
Sri Lanka is under strict Coronavirus curfew which prevents the gathering of people.
“It is my belief that curfews or health regulations should not be a bar to living according the Dhamma,” Prime Minister Rajapaksa said in a Vesak message.
“All Buddhists have the discipline to light a lamp and do some decorations from their own homes.”
Vesak marks the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Lord Buddha.
In Sri Lanka large pandals are erected and state and private businesses decorate their building with Vesak lanterns and lights in normal years.
Many people usually travel around to watch and also eat at dansala, where anything from rice to ice cream to drinks are given free to Vesak crowds. (Colombo/May08/2020)
