Sri Lanka PM urges calm, says groups attempting to generate instability
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinge said some groups are attempting create instability in the country and distract security authorities who are apprehending a terror network as a nation-wide curfew was announced.
"A group of persons created disturbances in Wayamba province, damaged property," Wickremesinghe said in a statement.
"They are also trying to create trouble in other areas.
"As a result they are distracting security authorities from their investigations. The intention of these groups is to de-stabilize the life of the people and de-stablize the country."
Unruly groups damaged Muslim owned shops in Wayamba province. Unrest also spread to Minuwangoda near Gampaha later in the day.
Police has imposed a curfew until 4.00 am tomorrow morning to prevent further incidents.
Groups of nationalists had been inciting people on facebook to boycott Muslims businesses. Authorities have blocked several social media platforms. (Colombo/May13/2019)
