Sri Lanka Podujana Party cancels some rallies as new Covid-19 total tops 2,600
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Podujana Party of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had cancelled several election rallies over a new Coronavirus cluster that expanded out of drug rehabilitation centres in the North Central area of the island, a party official said.
Rallies in Anuradhapura and Puttalam planned for the next three days by the SLPP had been cancelled, the official said.
Sri Lanka is heading for election on August 05, but authorities have found confirmed patients linked to staff from two drug rehabilitation centers.
Sri Lanka’s election commission had warned that some activity was not in compliance with health rules.
On Sunday July 12, authorities confirmed 94 patients most of them linked to the cluster, after confirming 57 the day before and 300 on Friday, taking the total 2,605 by 1500 hours.
Sri Lanka is generally effective in tracing and quarantining but there has been an unusual reluctance to test high risk groups, observers have said earlier. (Colombo/July12/2020)
