Sri Lanka Podujana Party consolidating landslide in 2020 general elections
EC0NOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Podujana Party of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has consolidated its lead over the Samagi Jana Balawegaya of Sajith Premadasa, with the United National Party of ex-PM Ranil Wickremesinghe getting below 5 percent in the party’s former strongholds.
The SLPP had won 6.8 million votes or 59.09 percent with over 187 polling divisions and postal votes declared so far in campaign headed by his brother Mahinda.
Out of the declared results SLPP had secured 118 seats.
SJB has won 42 seats while NPP won two seats and ITAK secured four seats.
UNP failed to win a single seat in their stronghold in Colombo.
The United National Party breakaway Samagi Jana Balawegaya was a distant second with 23.9 percent or 2.7 million votes.
National Peoples Power of Anura Dissanayake had 3.85 percent of the vote and Northern ITAK (Tamil National Alliance) had 2.9 percent of the vote.
The UNP of Ranil Wickremesinghe is struggling to win a seat after failing to get 5 percent in former strongholds in the capital Colombo.
The UNP was seen polling less than rejected votes.
The SLPP was asking for a two thirds majority to change the constitution. Party activists say the goal is almost within reach. (Colombo/Aug06/2020)
