Sri Lanka police arrest former internal trade minister Johnston Fernando

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lankan police Tuesday arrested parliamentarian and former minister of internal trade Johnston Fernando over alleged financial corruption in Lanka Sathosa, a state retail chain.

Police spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara said Fernando was arrested under the Public Property Act and would be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate who has discretionary power to grant bail or remand.

“He has been arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Unit (FCID) regarding financial corruption which occurred in Lanka Sathosa amounting to almost 5.2 million rupees,” Gunasekera said.

Police FCID had earlier filed a case against Fernando in the Magistrate’s Court in north-western Kurunegala where the alleged misappropriation of funds at three Sathosa retail outlets had occurred.
