Sri Lanka police to nab child porn uploaders; 18,000 images, videos posted in five weeks

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka police has announced an operation to nab people who upload child pornographic content to the internet.

Police media spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Ajith Rohana told the privately owned Derana TV on Wednesday (28) that 18,000 images and videos related to child porn has uploaded from Sri Lankan IP addresses between June 17 and July 26, as per Police Child & Women Bureau’s data.

“It includes child pornographic content of our children and children from abroad. Pornographic material of our children is in a top priority list,” he said.

Following a meeting with the Child and Women Bureau, Rohana said, police have traced all IP addresses and phone numbers of individuals who had uploaded the content.

In Sri Lanka, using children for the production of pornography is a crime under section 286 A of the penal code (obscene publication, exhibition relating to c hildren) and the Obscene Publications Ordinance.

“Even uploading pornographic material of foreign origin is a crime,” said Rohana.

Police will also take action separately against the people who share such material, he added. (Colombo/Jul29/2021)
