Sri Lanka port visit by Pakistani frigate
EconomyNext – A Pakistan Navy ship, Zulfiquar, called at Sri Lanka’s eastern port of Trincomalee on 3 March 2015 on a four-day goodwill visit that comes at a time of heightened sensitivity to warships using the island.
A statement from the Pakistan High Commission said the port call is part of "strong multifaceted relationship and engagement" between the defense establishments of the two countries.
The Sri Lanka Navy has planned a reception on PNS Zulfiquar on 4th March 2015 and the two navies will hold a joint exercise on 6th March 2015, it said.
PNS Zulfiquar has visited Sri Lanka in September 2009 and December 2010.
The ship, Zulfiquar, is the pioneer ship of the sword Class, F-22P Frigate Project of the Pakistan navy and was launched in April 2008.
The F-22P Project encompassed construction of three frigates in China while the fourth one was constructed at Karachi Shipyard, the statement said.
Last year, two calls at Colombo port by Chinese submarines draw attention and raised concern in India.
Sri Lanka’s new government has said it will not encourage such visits in future.
