Sri Lanka postal voting application deadline extended over coronavirus
ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has extended the March 17 postal voting application deadline for a few more days due to the special holidays declared over the coronavirus pandemic, an official statement said.
The Government Information Department said the Election Commission Chairman had declared the deadline for postal voting applications for the general elections to be held on April 25 will be announced later.
The deadline was set at midnight on March 17, however due to the holidays, applications received over the next few days would be regarded as those received prior to the deadline, the statement said.
Typically, government officials and security personnel on duty during the elections vote via post.
Many have been calling for the postponement of elections due to the pandemic, but so far, the government has said that elections will be held as scheduled.
