The power regulator said it was awaiting a formal request from the utility.
Sri Lanka is experiencing long power cuts due to forex shortages coming from money printed to keep interest rates down in a pegged exchange rate regime which has delayed payments for fuel ships, triggering an economic crisis.
The central bank last week raised policy rates by 100 basis points to slow credit, but analysts say further rate hikes and a float may be needed.
The power crisis worsened after small regular power cuts were denied to the CEB when they were first requested, forcing it to run down hydro reservoirs potentially creating water supply crisis to Colombo later in March due to overuse of the Kelani River cascade reservoirs.
The power will be cut as indicated “in the event CEB is compelled to take demand management measures due to inadequate generation as result of fuel shortage and unavailability of generators,” the Ceylon Electricity Board said.
