Sri Lanka President appoints acting police chief after bombing
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena had appointed Senior Deputy Inspector General C D Wickramaratne as acting Inspector General of Police, following a call for the incumbent to resign.
Islamist extremists bombed three churches and three hotels on Easter Sunday, despite specific warnings given by India that such attacks were planned.
President Sirisena said he had asked Police Chief Pujith Jayasundera to resign.
The IGP is appointed by a constitutional council and has tenure protection from political interference.
The President also said Jayantha Jayasuriya, ex-Attorney General, had been sworn is as Chief Justice.
