Sri Lanka president appoints new vice chancellor at Colombo University

ECONOMYNEXT – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed economist and academic Prof H D Karunaratne as Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, a spokesman said.

President’s spokesman Kingsly Rathnayake tweeted Wednesday (12) afternoon that Karunaratne’s appointment will come into effect on April 12.

Rajapaksa recently appointed Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero as Chancellor of the Colombo University. The appointment of the Buddhist monk, who is widely considered a loyalist of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, was controversial, with some students recently declining to accept their degree certificate from him at their graduation ceremony.

The monk, who backed the candidacy of Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the 2019 presidential polls later became harshly critical of his presidency and the government, prior to his appointment. (Colombo/Jan12/2022)
