ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has indicated that he may run for a second term at the 2024 presidential elections, according to a spokesman.
Rajapaksa had told media heads at a meeting Monday (19) morning that he will have time to implement his policies not just over the remaining three years of his term but the five years after, president’s spokesman Kingley Ratnayake tweeted.
මගේ ප්රතිපත්ති ක්රියාත්මක කරන්න අවුරුදු 3 පමණක් නොව, ඉන් පසුවත් තව අවුරුදු 5ක් තිබෙනවා, ජනාධිපතිතුමා-

There had been speculation that Rajapaksa will not be seeking a second term.
In March 2020, he said he needs only one term to finish what he had started.
The president’s brother Basil Rajapaksa, who was recently appointed Finance Minister, has been touted as a possible future presidential candidate of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramanuna (SLPP).
In March this year, SLPP MP Sahan Pradeep said Basil Rajapaksa is the most qualified to run for president in the event the incumbent president doesn’t seek re-election.
