Sri Lanka president has powers to spend, fund Coronavirus fight: PM
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President has constitutional powers to allocate funds for government activities as well as the fight against Coronavirus, after parliamnent was dissolved, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.
He disputed a claim made by United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that a vote on account ended at the end of April.
“Under Article 150(3) of the Constitution, the President is vested with the power to allocate funds from the Consolidated Fund to maintain government servicesafter Parliament has been dissolved,” Prime Minister Rajapaksa said in a statement.
“Hence the public should not entertain any fears about the availability of funds for the anti-Coronavirus campaign and to maitain other government services.”
Sri Lanka’s finance ministry had already prepared a mini-budget running from March 06, May.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s polls to elect a new parliament which was planned for April 25 had also been delayed till after May 14. (Colombo/Mar23/2020)
