ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has landed in New York on September 18, to attend a UN General Assembly on September 22, his office said.
The 76th Session of the UNGA begins on Tuesday, September 22, under the theme “Building resilience through hope – to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations.”
He was welcomed by Mohan Pieris, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations.
President Rajapaksa will hold bilateral discussions with several heads of state, the statement said.
President Rajapaksa who was a long-term resident of the US was also a former citizen.
The Foreign Ministerial level summit of the General Assembly is expected on Monday.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister G L Pieris is also in New York.
President Rajapaksa address the General Assembly on September 22. He is also expected to address the Food Systems Summit on September 23, and a High-level Dialogue on Energy on September 24. (Colombo/Sept19/2021)
