Sri Lanka President miffed over Singapore’s silence on wanted ex-CB Governor

ECONOMYNEXT  – President Maithripala Sirisena says he is disappointed that Singapore had not responded to a request to find ex-Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran who is wanted in connection with the biggest securities scam in Sri Lanka’s history.

Sri Lankan-born Mahendran is a Singapore citizen and an Interpol Red Notice had been issued for his arrest.

President Sirisena said he had apprised Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the need for Mahendran to be brought back to Sri Lanka to face justice, when he visited Singapore in January.

However, Sirisena said, nothing has happened and he was “disappointed at the inaction.”

“At least the government of Singapore should clarify as to whether this individual is living in their country or not,” President Sirisena told a ceremony in Colombo where launched a five-year, anti-graft drive.

A Presidential Commission that probed the bondscam said Mahendran’s son-in-law Arjun Aloysius had used insider information to make profits for his bond-dealing company, Perpetual Treasuries.

Sirisena said he was the first head of government since the 1950s who appointed a Presidential Commission of Inquiry into acts committed by his own government.

"This inquiry into the Bonds Scam caught the imagination of the people,” he said.

President Sirisena said Mahendran had appealed the Interpol Red Notice but following an inquiry, it had been re-issued.  (Colombo/Feb18/2019-SB)
