Sri Lanka President opposes SOFA style deals for US forces visits

ECONOMYNEXT – President Maithripala Sirisena said he was against agreements allowing US forces come to Sri Lanka and has blocked them in cabinet, in a stumbling block in relations with America

"I am against this agreement," President Sirisena told reporters in Colombo. "I have spoken against it in cabinet.
He was also opposing a visiting forces agreement, he said.

A Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) which was signed several years earlier was coming up for renewal.

Government ministers had told parliament that the agreement will be renewed with some clauses such as those giving
immunity to visiting forces removed. 

However nothing has happened so far.

Earlier this month US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cancelled a visit to Sri Lanka.  (Colombo/June26/2019)
