ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is in London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, met King Charles III on the sidelines of the royal ceremony last weekend, the president’s media division (PMD) said.
“World leaders who were in London to attend the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on the 18th of September.
“The picture shows President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who participated in the event, having a friendly conversation with King Charles III,” a statement from the PMD said on Tuesday September 20.
First lady Maitri Wickramasinghe also took part in the event, the statement said.
Political analysts say President Wickremesinghe has been looking to improve Sri Lanka’s relations with the West, as the country finds itself between the proverbial rock and a hard place vis-à-vis China and India.
Sri Lanka’s giant neigbhour across the Palk straight just this Monday (Sep 19) surpassed China as the island nation’s biggest bilateral lender.
However, the West-friendly India, despite its much needed assistance to Sri Lanka in the country’s hour of need, has been somewhat cold diplomatically, analysts say, after Sri Lanka permitted a Chinese tracking vessel to make a port call at the Hambantota Port in the island’s deep south.
