ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is to ban the import of chain saws to halt the illegal felling of trees, under a proposal submitted to cabinet by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The cabinet of ministers had given clearance for the ban, the state information office said.
President Sirisena is also attempting to ban carpentry workshops generating an outcry. Others said the bank may apply only to mobile saw mills and not all carpentry workshops.
He is also moving banning tobacco cultivation and asbestos.
President Sirisena had ordered chain saws already in the country to be registered earlier.
The cabinet paper said there are 82,000 registered chain saws in the country.
The imports will be banned under a 1969 import control law.
