In Badulla and Hambanotota districts around 70 percent of the votes had ben cast by 1400, local TV said, quoting returning officers.

In the Kilinochchi over 60 percent had been cast. By 1300 most districts had seen around 60 percent of votes cast,

Polling booths close at 5.00 pm, but anyone waiting in line outside the
booth will not get an opportunity to vote.

“Under Sri Lanka’s law only voters who have been issued a ballot paper by closing time are eligible to vote,” Deshapriya said.

“To ensure that you are not left outside in a last minute queues please go to vote early,” he said.

The large number of candidates had expanded the cost of the election to
around 7.5 billion rupees, from the planned 4.0 billion rupees, he said.

The wooden ballot boxes could not hold more than 400 of the long ballot paper, requiring plastic coated card board ballot boxes to be imported, he said.

The election commission is expecting to release the first postal results before midnight Saturday.

Polling has been peaceful in most districts though a convoy of buses carrying Muslim voters had been shot at in Tantirimale, and there had been attempts to set up road block in north, reports said. (Colombo/Nov16/2019)
