Sri Lanka Presidential poll nominations, 2 objections by 10.30am: Elections Chief
ECONOMYNEXT – Out of 41 persons who placed deposits for upcoming Presidential polls, seven have not turned up to submit nominations papers, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said.
The commission will meet prospective candidates from 10.45 am Monday to to brief them.
Deshapriya said up to 10.30 am two objections have been received up to 10.30 m and there were seven no shows.
He said he had information that another person has arrived at the commission.
Candidates from main alliances and parties including Sajith Premadasa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake came to hand over nominations.
Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, who was described last week as a stand-by candidate in case Gotabaya Rajapaksa is disqualified due to questions over his citizenship had also placed a deposit from an independent group.
A spokesman for Kumara Welgama, who represented a who said they wanted to protect the Sri Lanka Freedom Party said he was withdrawing.
Among other candidates are a monk, two businessmen and a former army commander. (Colombo/Oct07/2019 – Updated III)
