Sri Lanka President’s party loses three members to Ranil
ECONOMYNEXT – Three members of President Maithripala Sirisena’s party crossed over to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s side on Tuesday as a cabinet of ministers is due to be named in a administration that seems to be at loggerheads.
United People’s Freedom Alliance members Indika Bandaranaika, Vjith Vjithamuni Soysa, Lakshman Seneviratne crossed over, shortly after colleague Udaya Gammanpila said all 101 members of the party decided to get together a strong force.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya recognized Mahinda Rajapaksa as the leader of the opposition Tuesday, saying the UPFA was no longer in the government after it quit the coalition.
Other legislators raised objections saying Rajapaksa and several others were ‘strangers’ in the house after they publicly joined the newly created Sri Lanka Podujana Party.
They have called for a select committee to examine whether there are ‘strangers’ in the house. (Colombo/Dec18/2018)
