Sri Lanka President’s party to remain in coalition

ECONMYNEXT – Many members of Sri Lanka Freedom Party of President Maithripala Sirisena favours remaining in the ruling coalition a senior minister said, while 16 members who voted for a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe wanted to quit reports said.

At a meeting of the central committee of the SLFP had had decided to remain with the coalition, Mahinda Amaraweera who is also the general secretary of the broader United People’s Freedom Alliance told reporters.

Amaraweera said it was the majority view that all 42 members of the SLFP must stay together, but anyone who wanted was free to go.

Sixteen ministers and deputy ministers voted for the no-confidence motion and members of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s party has been insisting that they leave the coalition.

A cabinet re-shuffle was expected later this month, but he declined to give a specific date.
