ECONOMYNEXT – Secretary to Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will visit Qatar for talks on clean energy, following visit by the minister energy minister of the Gulf State Saad Sherida Al Kaabi to the Indian Ocean island.
Qatar is a top global producer and exporter for liquefied natural gas.
President nominated his Secretary P B Jayasundara as his representative to visit Qatar for energy talks following an invitation by the visiting minister the President’s office said.
The visiting minister has promised to assemble a group of Qatar firms for talks, saying they had established similar link with Poland and Pakistan.
Firms from the Gulf state such as state-run Qatar Gas, has struck long-term contracts to supply LNG to Poland.
Sri Lanka is also planning to build several 300MegaWatt LNG power plants and convert existing furnace oil plants to LNG.
Sri Lanka still does not have an LNG terminal to unload, store and re-gasssify LNG.
President Rajapska has said that Sri Lanka plans to have 80 percent renewable energy sometime in the future.
President Rajapsksa had said Sri Lanka was also keen to export more tea and organic, fruits and vegetables to Qatar. (Colombo/Jan25/2020)
