ECONOMYNEXT – State-run Sri Lanka Railways is planning to recruit 8,000 workers to take the total up to 20,000 which is the permitted cadre, officials said amid plans by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to trim the state sector to reduce the tax burden on the public.
Sri Lanka Railways has decided to recruit 3000 employees as laborers work from an existing ‘multi-task force’ employees recruited by the government, Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardana said.
The permitted cadre for the Railway Department is 20,000, and the currently 12,000 employees were working, General Manager of the Railway department, D.S. Gunasinghe said.
“We have vacancies for around 8000 more, and ¼ of the requirements are for technical services in the department,” Gunasinghe said.
President Rajapaksa set up the multi-task force for people to give jobs to unqualified persons in a bid to reduce ‘unemployment’ after hist economic advisors cut taxes for stimulus.
The multi-task force was allocated 9.8 billion rupees in the 2023 budget.

Unlike other state transport enterprises like state buses, or the road development authority, which are statutory boards with a provident fund, the railways is a Department, entitling the workers to a lifetime pension from public taxes.
“The 3000 will be recruited from the multi-tasking employees reserve of the government, because we cannot recruit new people by paying them a new salary and a pension using our taxpayers’ money,” Gunawardana said.
The recruitment into railways come as President Ranil Wickremesinghe is trying to trim the bloated state. He also brough the retirement age, which was extended by ex-Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa amid an economic crisis in 2022, back to the old level.
From January a number of Railway technical staff had to retire.
“Media reports said, the railway department is on the brink of collapsing because of the retirement of employees,” Minister Gunawardane told reporters at a media briefing on Friday.
“That is completely false. Only 410 employees retired in 2022, including nine engine drivers, 13 assistant drivers,13 station masters and 20 engine guards”.
The Public Service Commission had given permission for Railway Department hire back retired engine drivers and guards on contract. (Colombo/ Jan 13/2022)
If NPP come to power, with their Socialist Ideology. Good luck to the tax payers, they will recruit more to the state sector, not saying the ruling robbers should be voted in as well.
