Sri Lanka rains, landslides, claim lives, thousands hit by floods
ECONOMYNEXT – Heavy rains and landslides have left at least six people dead or missing while thousands have been caught in floods including in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre said over 4,000 families had been hit by floods with most of them in the heavily populated Colombo district.
Waters in several rivers were rising and sluice gates at several reservoirs have been opened with warnings issued to residents downstream.
Sri Lanka and part of India has been hit by heavy rains from a tropical depression following two months of usually hot weather.
The Disaster Management Centre said two people were confirmed dead by landslides by mid-day Monday.
More were feared dead following another landslide in the late evening.
Over 600 families left homeless by floods were housed in temporary camps.
