Sri Lanka records first frontline health worker death due to COVID-19
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka recorded its first frontline worker death due to COVID-19 today with the passing of Dr Gayan Danthanarayana at the Karapitiya hospital in Galle this morning (02), the national pandemic task force said.
A spokesperson for the task force told EconomyNext that the Danthanarayana had been undergoing treatment at the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) over the past six days.
The 31-year-old medical professional was working at the Ragama hospital that has been allocated to treat COVID-19 patients. Upon contracting the virus, he was transferred from the Mulleriyawa hospital to the Karapitiya hospital last week.
The task force said the post mortem will be carried out today at the hospital.
“We cannot yet confirm whether he was suffering from any other illnesses when he tested positive for COVID-19,” the spokesperson said.
Danthanarayana was also musician well-known in Sri Lanka’s heavy metal scene. (Colombo/Feb02/2021)
