ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka police recorded the highest single-day arrests of 1, 561 for violating the unofficial COVID-19 lockdown, police said.
There has also been an increased number of attempts to cross provincial borders, police spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said.
Police checked 6,003 vehicles at 14 entry points to the Western province in a 24 hour period that ended at 6am June 17, of which 105 people in 61 vehicles had to cross provinces despite travel restrictions.
Rohana said some of these people were warned and asked to turn back while others were arrested and their vehicles seized. He did not clarify why some were arrested while others were simply turned back.
Out of the 1,561 people arrested for violating the quarantine law, 228 were from Kuliyapitiya, 165 from Kandy and 137 from Matale.
Since October 30, a total of 36,921 have been arrested for violating the quarantine law, police records show. (Colombo/June17/2021)
