Sri Lanka rejects assassination claims
ECONOMYNEXT – Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera Wednesday refuted reports of an attempt to assassinate former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family and lambasted several media outlets of misreporting court proceedings.
Samaraweera dismissed as “false, baseless and inflammatory’ the claim in most Sinhalese-language newspapers and English dailies of an alleged plot to wipe out the Rajapaksa family.
“Journalists are free to observe any court proceedings in person or to apply for transcripts of proceedings and court filings through the Registrar of the Court.
“Therefore, it is inexcusable to make such serious and inflammatory statements on a matter of public record without citing any sources or mode of corroboration,” the minister said in a statement. (COLOMBO, September 26, 2018)
