Sri Lanka releases US$53,000 seized from Iran national
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has released 53,455 dollars in cash seized from an Iranian national following an appeal from the country’s embassy, the finance ministry said.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was appointed as Finance Minister by President Maithripala Sirisena had ordered the fund to be released on ‘humanitarian’ grounds following a diplomatic appeal, the statement said.
The Iranian embassy had said the money was being taken in cash because there were no banking transactions between the two countries.
The individual was working at an Iranian funded project in Sri Lanka and it was the persons salary, the statement said.
Financial transactions with Iran are under sanctions.
The statement said in June 2018, a similar release had been made by the then finance minister. (Colombo/Nov27/2018)
