ECONOMYNEXT — Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has approved an additional 2,500 million rupees to the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) to finance ongoing procurement for the 2026 Yala season, minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
The government initially released 6,000 million rupees to the board, but this was insufficient.
“As the paddy harvest has not yet been fully gathered in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Mannar, and Mullaitivu districts, as well as in the Mahaweli B, C, and H zones, it has been observed that the funds currently allocated for procurement in these areas are insufficient,” he said.
To bridge the shortfall, the Cabinet approved a proposal to release an additional 2,500 million rupees — from the 7,500 million rupees allocated to the ministry for the expedited 2026 Yala purchasing program — to the board.
Jayatissa told reporters the PMB originally planned to buy 39,500 metric tons across 143 warehouses, but purchases had already surged to 67,156 metric tons, costing roughly 8,221 million rupees.
Responding to questions over reported payment delays to farmers in areas like Ampara, Jayatissa denied systemic problems and noted that procurement had far exceeded targets.
“You can see that right now, we have actually exceeded our limits — we have procured well above our targeted amount, with these 2,500 million rupees, we have the ability to pay them,” Jayatissa said.
He said 19,426 metric tons have already been bought in Ampara for 2,350 million rupees, which has been disbursed.
Additionally, 10,000 million rupees was provided as loans to small and medium millers, while 7,500 million rupees was allocated to District Secretaries and Government Agents for procurement. (Colombo/Sep15/2026)
