Sri Lanka rupee opens lower, bonds steady
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka rupee opened wide around 174.70/175.10 to the US dollar in the spot market, down from 174.50/80 percent amid a political crisis, while bonds opened steady, dealers said.
Call money was quoted around 8.40/45 percent dealers said.
In bond markets a three-year bond maturing on 15.10.2021 was quoted at 11.00/30 percent, around the same levels as Tuesday’s close, dealers said.
A five-year bond maturing on 15.07.2023 was quoted at 11.3/11.65 percent, up from the previous day’s closing of 11.30/40 percent.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was controversially appointed Prime Minister and was also made Finance Minister is to assume duties at the finance ministry later in the day.
Sri Lanka’s speaker Karu Jayasuriya has asked President Maithripala Sirisena to re-open parliament before November 16.
