Sri Lanka seeks investors to develop historic Galle Port in US$175mn PPP

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had cleared a proposal to call expressions of interest investors to develop the historic Port of Galle as a regional commercial port with additional services including tourism, Cabinet spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana said.

“The project involves deepening the port from the current 10 metres to 18 to 20 metres and building a new breakwater,” Minister Pathirana said.

“It has been estimated to cost approximately 175 million US dollars. The cabinet approve calling of expressions of interest to take the project forward as public private partnership.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority had said in the past it wanted to build yatch marina and also build cruise ship terminal.

“A feasibility study had already been completed,” Minister Pathirana said. “An environmental study had been done. The approval of the UNESCO had already been obtained. “The project can go beyond providing traditional services. ”
