Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council concerned over sudden resignation of Customs chief
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council said it was concerned over the “sudden” resignation of the Director General of Sri Lanka Customs Jagath Wijeweeera.
“It is with great regret that we have noted the sudden resignation of the Director General of Sri Lanka Customs,” it said in a statement.
“Mr. Jagath P Wijeweera has been one of the few director generals of Customs who initiated and hands on approach in solving importers and exporters issues spontaneously.
“He was also spearheading the Customs initiatives on e-Commerce and rendered an enormous service by providing leadership to his team and adopting the balance approach with all stakeholders.”
The statement said Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council appreciates Wijeweera’s efforts and acknowledge his “straightforwardness, honestly and transparency” when dealing with Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council and its associate members.
“We urge the authorities to ensure the good work commenced by the Customs will continue in order the trade and related services would benefit.”
Wijeweera’s sudden resignation was announced Monday by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake who said his resignation letter cited personal reasons.
