COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka slammed one-off levies on telecom firms and direct-to-home satellite broadcasters which could bring in 4.0 billion rupees, finance minister Ravi Karunanayake said revising a budget for 2015.
A one off levy of 250 million rupees will be imposed on mobile telephone operators and with five operators would rake in 2.25 billion rupees.
Direct-to-Home satellite television operators will be subject to a one-off levy of one billion rupees.
"They have been in Sri Lanka for years and have more than 50,000 customers but have not paid any dues to government," Karunanayake said.
Satellite owners who use the location reserved for a Sri Lankan satellite will also be subject to a billion rupee one-off levy.
