ECONOMYNEXT – Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena placed his signature on Sri Lanka’s China-backed Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill May 27 morning, the Government Information Department said quoting the Speaker’s office.
The controversial bill was passed in parliament on May 20 subject to amendments following a Supreme Court decision, amid protest from opposition parties, activists and members of the clergy.
With the Speaker signing off on the blueprint on May 27, a public holiday in Sri Lanka, the Colombo Port City Commission Act is now in effect.
Critics including former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has accused the government of rushing the bill and endangering Sri Lanka’s sovereignty. (Colombo/May27/2021)
