Sri Lanka state retailer Lanka Sathosa appoints ex-army major as CEO

ECONOMYNEXT – Lanka Sathosa Limited, a loss-making state-run retail chain has appointed a retired army major as its chief executive officer as part of a revamp of its top management.

Retired Major Anura Pandithage has take over as Chief Executive Officer from September 21, the state owned enterprise said in a statement.

A 20 year army veteran, he has held human resources and administration positions I the private sector after retirement.

He had graduated from the Army Command and Staff College for Defense Management and has a Masters in Business Administration from the Open University of Sri Lanka. He is a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM).

Four Deputy General Managers had also been appointed.

“Strengthening our senior management team with the appointment of these experienced leaders, I look forward to seeing Lanka Sathosa transform Sri Lanka’s retail space and deliver greater value to our customers and all other stakeholders,” Lanka Sathosa Chairman Noshed Perera said.

Wing Commander Primal Paragahawatta (Retd.) will be DGM – Human Resources and Administration.

He had been in Sri Lanka Air Force’s Directorates of Administration and Provost for 21 years, holding positions in HR & Administration, Security, Investigation and Ceremonial Duties during his tenure.

Priyantha Godegama has over 17 years of experience in civil Eengineering, will be lead Lanka Sathosa’s Engineering team as DGM – Engineering. Prior to this, he had served as the Project Director of the Urban Development Authority’s Urban Regeneration Project.

Sumathi Hewavitharana has been appointed DGM – Information Technology. He has 25 years of experience in the field of IT, having served as Functional Consultant at WCS Lanka (Private) Limited; Consultant, Manager and Business Analyst at Nestle Lanka PLC and IT Manager at Maliban Biscuit Manufactories (Private) Limited.

B. Thusitha Kumara Nissankahas is DGM – Internal Audit. A practicing Chartered Accountant, he brings with him over 17 years of experience in Corporate Finance in the private sector.

Lanka Sathosa Limited has 420 outlets and over 4500 employees.

LankaSathosa lost 2.25 billion rupees in 2018, 2,882 million in 2019 and 197 million in the first four months of 2020, according to Treasury data. (Colombo/Oct17/2020)
