ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s State Tourism Minister Diana Gamage has claimed that she has brought a $5 billion foreign direct investment (FDI) to create a transport hub in the capital Colombo under a public-private-partnership (PPP).
She did not give more details on the investment and most foreign investors have been reluctant to come to the island nation because of an unprecedented economic crisis.
“I have brought in an investor and this is a five-billion-dollar project regarding public transport,” Gamage told the parliament.
“And it is a hub that is going to be a public private Partnership. That will be running from the fort station to Maradana and will be built in few years.”
Gamage, who was the state transport minister, said the investor has been in contact while she was the state transport minister.
“We know the train station needs to be developed. Tourists like to travel on train. Specially the train stations in tourists zones must be developed. This was a project I brought sometime ago and it has come to us again.”
The minister’s comments come as she is banned of overseas travel ban by a court over a case filed challenging her citizenship. The State Minister is also alleged to have produced fake documents to obtain a passport. The next hearing is scheduled for December 15. (Colombo/Nov29/2022)
