Sri Lanka stocks cross 8,000 point mark

CONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka stocks closed 0.70 per cent higher crossing a psychological 8,000 point threshold in the benchmark index Monday, brokers said.

The Colombo benchmark All Share Price Index gained 55.60 points to close at 8,022.55.

The S&P SL20 index of more liquid stocks is up 1.76 per cent or 53.48 points to close at 3,083.75.

Turnover was 6.2 billion rupees with 84 stocks gaining and 98 falling.

Market participants said the market gained today pushed by Expolanka ahead of the June Quarter results as they expect the company’s profitability to go up.

Expolanka has also contributed 42 per cent to the market turnover today.

Epolanka has been reporting high profits due to unusually high and persistent freight rates, with most of its revenues coming from overseas unit.

Expolanka Holdings stocks closed 8.30 rupees up at 62.80 rupees a share.

The market is also on an uptrend after 23-weeks (after February 08 2021) and the highest turnover recorded today after March 13, market participants said.

It is also the second time in five months the market has passed the 5-billion turnover range.

Negotiated trade or crossings in the market contributed 937 million rupees to the market turnover. A crossing in dye maker Teejay Lanka generated 41.8 million rupees, Commercial Bank generated 334 million rupees and eight crossings in the conglomerate John Keells Holdings generated 525.6 million rupees.

LOLC Development Finance closed 42.25 rupees down at 380.25 rupees a share and LOLC Holdings gained 18.75 rupees to close at 441.00 rupees.

LOLC Finance closed 30 cents up at 7.00 rupees, Browns Investment closed 30 cents up at 6.50 rupees a share while Brown and Company gained 5.00 rupees to close at 181.25 rupees a share.

John Keells Holdings closed 3.00 rupees up at 142.00 rupees a share and Vallibel one closed 2.50 rupees up at 56.20 rupees a share.

Carson Cumberbatch closed 7.75 rupees down at 292.25 rupees.

Hayleys Plc closed 1.80 rupees up at 79.20 rupees with key subsidiaries Haycarb Plc closed 1.80 rupees up at 98.50 rupees and Dipped Products gained 1.80 rupees to close at 56.20 rupees share.

The Kingsbury closed 30 cents down at 8.30 and Singer Sri Lanka closed 60 cents up at 19.10 rupees.

Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC closed 1.00 rupees down at 979.00 rupees, Piramal Glass Ceylon closed 20 cents down at 13.60 rupees and Ceylon Cold Stores closed 1.75 rupees down at 667.00 rupees.

Sri Lanka Telecom closed 40 cents down at 33.40 rupees, Richard Pieris and Company closed 10 cents up at 17.20 rupees.

Dialog Axiata closed flat at 12.20 rupees, Nestle Lanka closed 30.00 rupees down at 1,315.75 rupees and Kotmale Holdings closed 24.25 rupees down at 396.50 rupees a share.

Commercial Leasing and Finance PLC closed 20 cents up at 7.40 rupees a share and Dialog Finance Plc closed 70 cents down at 85.90 rupees a share.

Housing Development Finance closed 50 cents down at 36.00 rupees while Central Finance Company closed 40 cents up at 91.20 rupees.

Commercial Bank of Ceylon closed 50 cents up at 87.80 rupees.

Hatton National Bank closed 1.75 rupees down at 131.25 rupees a share and Sampath Bank closed 20 cents up at 53.20 rupees a share.

DFCC Bank closed 30 cents down at 60.50 rupees and Nations Trust Bank closed 10 cents down at 57.50
rupees.

Seylan Bank closed flat at 48.40 rupees and Pan Asia Banking Corporation closed 20 cents up at 16.40 rupees.

Bukit Darah closed 4.75 rupees down at 303.50 rupees and Hemas Holdings closed 60 cents up at 81.60 rupees.

Ceylon Grain Elevators closed 1.25 rupees up at 141.75 rupees.

Distilleries Company closed 30 cents down at 19.60 rupees a share and Melstacorp Plc closed 90 cents up at 50.90 rupees.

In the hotel sector, Eden Hotel Lanka closed 20 cents up at 14.30 rupees, John Keells Hotels closed 30 cents down at 10.80 rupees a share and Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings closed 1.80 down at 32.00
rupees.

Access Engineering closed flat at 23.00 rupees.

Aitken Spence Plc closed 30 cents down at 64.30 rupees.

Windforce Closed 10 cents down at 19.00 rupees, Chrissworld limited closed 20 cents down at 13.00 rupees and Prime Land Residencies closed 20 cents down at 9.60 rupees.

Royal Ceramic Lanka closed 20 cents up at 37.00 rupees, Lanka Tiles closed 30 cents up at 54.10 rupees, Lanka Walltiles closed flat at 65.00 rupees while Lanka ceramic closed 2.25 rupees down at 155.25 rupees.
