Sri Lanka Supreme Court affirms death penalty of Duminda Silva

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court Thursday confirmed the death sentence handed down the former defence ministry monitoring MP Duminda Silva for the murder of a fellow legislator and three others.

The five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Priyasath Dep affirmed the conviction and punishment given by the High Court in September 2016 for the murder that took place during an election campaign in 2011.

Duminda Silva and four others were indicted over the killing of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra. The court acquitted one of the accused, a police constable, while confirming the sentence on the other convicts and also ordering that death penalty on Silva be carried out.

Reporters at the court house said Silva was seen in tears as the unanimous judgement was read out. There is no recourse to further appeals unless Silva pleads for clemency from the president. (COLOMBO, October 11, 2018)
