Sri Lanka telecom regulator issues warning over premium call back scam

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s telecom regulator has warned subscribers not to return foreign calls from unknown numbers amid a suspected premium call back scam where large sums are billed for those who call back.

Calls from several African countries have been made to subscribers in Sri Lanka which are quickly cut, often before they can be answered.

When the call is returned to the numbers, which is premium service number, the subscriber ends up with a big bill.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka told customers not to return calls to unknown numbers and also not to reply text messages.

Complaints could be made to the TRC on text messages to the number 1,700. (Colombo/Dec27/2019)
