Sri Lanka Timber Corporation Chairman axed
ECONOMYNEXT – President Maithripala Sirisena has sacked the chairman of the State Tiber Corporation, Anuruddha Polgampala, after learning that the official was facing several corruption charges.
Polgampola was given the job shortly after his predecessor Piyadasa Dissanayake was sacked after he was caught in the company of the President’s Chief of Staff I. H. K. Mahanama while accepting a 20 million rupee bribe last week.
Sources close to the president said he was unaware of Polgampola’s chequered past, but had given the job in good faith.
Polgampola had been with the Wimal Weerawansa faction of the JVP and defected to Sirisena’s SLFP faction before the February local council elections.
The embarrassing appointment raised serious questions about vetting carried out by the presidential secretariat which is currently without a chief of staff. (COLOMBO, May 10, 2018)
