Sri Lanka to co-produce Sinovac vaccines: Minister

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is planning to co-produce Sinovac vaccines in the island collaborating with China, State Minister for Pharmaceuticals Channa Jayasumana told reporters.

“A plan in Kundasale (in the Kandy district) is being readied for this,” he said after a receiving a stock of Sinopharm vaccines sent from China.

China’s Sinopharm was been approved by the World Health Organization on May 07.

Sinovac is also a vero-cell inactivated virus similar to Sinopharm. It is in advanced stage of review at the and a decision could come in May itself according WHO information released earlier in May.

It is not clear whether Sri Lanka is setting up a fill and finish plant or the vaccine will be made from scratch.

Vaccines made in plants in different countries individually approved. (Colombo/May27/2021)

    Start after Sinovac is WHO approved. Fill and finish plant is preferable as pandemic is not permanent
