Sri Lanka to expand oxygen storage, boost hospital supply with concentrators: Health Minister

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is procuring cryogenic liquid oxygen tanks for six hospitals to assure availability, and is also buying concentrators and 2,500 mobile concentrators to expand supply, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

“Cabinet has authorized the Health Ministry to call bids for six Cryogenic oxygen tanks with a 22-ton capacity through Ceylon Oxygen Limited and Gas world Pvt Ltd which are registered as importers and suppliers of oxygen,” she told parliament.

Cryogenic tanks allow large volumes of oxygen to be taken by tanker and re-filled and stored at hospitals instead of trucking small cylinders around the country which gets emptied quickly.

“Biddings will also be called to purchase 120,000 litres of Medical Oxygen monthly to meet the demand,” She said.

State Pharmaceuticals Corporation will do the procurement process.

In order to expand oxygen production within hospitals, the cabinet has approved the purchase of oxygen concentrators to 14 hospitals in the country at the district level, Minister Wanniarachchi said.

“And to confirm the continuous supply of oxygen to COVID patients, the cabinet has approved the purchase of 2500 portable oxygen concentrators through the procurement process in order to provide 100 units to each district,” she said.

Minister Wanniarachchi said Sri Lanka’s state hospital system has a daily demand of 40 tonnes for oxygen which is supplied continuously without any disruption.

In early May she said Sri Lanka had a daily demand of 25 tonnes of oxygen and the country had a capacity of 80 tonnes. (Colombo/June23/2021)
