ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will hire 150,000 state workers made up of those who have passed the grade eight exam and 53,000 unemployed graduates, Minister Bandula Gunawardane said.
“In 2020 all these will be given jobs,” Gunawardane said. “There are 53,000 unemployed graduates. They will be hired regardless of whether their degrees are external or resident.”
They will initially be given a 6 month leadership and professional training, he said.
They will be recruited from Samurdhi subsistance allowance recipients or poorer families, Gunawardane said.
The government has initially said the 8-grade passed workers will be paid 30,000 rupees a month.
Gunawardane on Thursday said the workers will be paid 28,000 rupees, while for the graduates, allowances have not yet been decided.
Sri Lanka had 1.41 million state workers in 2018. The 2019 numbers have not yet been released. (Colombo/Jan23/2020)
