Sri Lanka to get US$125mn equivalent grant from China on Wang Yi visit

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will receive an 800 million yuan (about 125millon US dollars) grant as part of agreements signed following a visit by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Ambassador Qi Zhenhong told reporters in Colombo.

The money can be used to for food, medicine and infrastructure, a government official said.

The 800 million yuan will come from China International Development Co-operation Agency (CIDCA) through a economic and technical co-operation agency.

The Economic and Technical Co-operation agreement was signed by Sri Lankas Treasury Secretary S R Attygalle and CIDCA Vice Chairman Zhang Maoyu.

Another unspecified grant agreement was also signed between Sri Lanka and CIDCA to fund the construction of 2,000 housing units for low income people in the Colombo district.

China also signed an agreement with the Ministry of Health to provide kidney disease screening units on ambulances.

An agreement was also signed to refurbish the BMICH conference hall in Colombo which was constructed and given as a gift by China.
