ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka plans to give free hold land rights to farmers who have around two million acres of land, Presidnet Ranil Wickremesinghe has said.
The “decision to grant freehold rights to farmers holding approximately 2 million acres of land, marking a significant step towards agricultural reform,” the President’s media office said, referring to a speech made at YPO Colombo Experience: Rediscover the Pearl’ conference held on November 18.
Sri Lanka has large tracts of state land, some of which were given to settler families under various agricultural schemes after independence, but without freehold.
Some land cannot even be inherited by a girl child, critics have said.
Attempts to given freehold land to rural farmers have met with opposition from sections of the urban intelligentsia in the past, who themselves enjoy the benefit. (Colombo/Nov19/2023)
